Creating Value with Responsible Electronics

Hybrid printed electronics is a method where electronic printing boards are produced through conventional (roll-to-roll) printing techniques combined with pick and place assembly systems of electronic components. The technique is especially effective on flexible and stretchable foils creating unique formfactor properties. Integration, manufacturing and materials use can be optimized resulting in sustainable manufacturing of electronics. A growing desire for continuous data collection, real time information and connectivity has resulted in increased demand for electronic functionalities that are fully integrated in everyday objects. Consumer electronics, lighting healthcare, wearable electronics, IoT and smart packaging are examples of market segments that follow this trend. However, recycling and/or dismantling of the PCB and electronics is hardly done or occurs at very well defined conditions. As simultaneously the lifetime of such electronic products is decreasing (or are even becoming completely disposable), the environmental pressure rises exponentially, which requires dedicated climate actions to allow sustainable and responsible production and consumption of electronics. The talk discusses the potential of printed electronics in numerous applications combined with reliability issues and standards based on printed electronics demonstrators that are all fully recyclable.

Display Performance in Ambient Light

Evaluating the performance of large format displays and mobile devices for different ambient lighting conditions using a mobile test setup.  Today, displays are almost ubiquituous and used for various purposes - in mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets, but also in installed media systems for entertainment, information and advertisement.

In many applications, displays have to perform well in environments that are strongly influenced by ambient lighting conditions dominated by the location - like smartphones, tablets and notebooks used outdoors or when traveling in trains. Large format displays used as information and advertising displays (Digital Signage) have to perform well outdoors in public spaces or in sunlit shop windows. They must assure that information can be read quickly and accurately and advertising content is reproduced with high contrast and color fidelity - especially important for logo colors and skin tones.

According to datasheets, today's display technology can easily achieve very high contrast values, like more than 1000:1, and cover at least 100% of the sRGB color space - both being usually measured in the lab under darkroom conditions. However, displays often perform differently in ambient light - and not always according to the expectations of their users. For real-world applications, decision makers should have additional information at hand on how a display will perform in real-world ambient light conditions.

For display reviews in magazines and as a planning aid for projects, we have developed a test procedure that makes it possible to evaluate display performance for best-case and worst-case ambient light scenarios. The test setup is mobile so that also large format displays can be measured without having to transport them to a measurement lab.

Evolving CE products in the Circular Economy Era

IEC TC61 is one of the largest and oldest organizations in IEC, whose scope is preparation of safety requirements for household and commercial appliances. IEC TC61 publications under 60335 series are standards recognized across the world.

With more than 200 publications and more then 100 types of appliances, TC61 keeps working not only on maintaining qualitative targets for the safety principles of design, installation, testing and verification techniques, but also evaluation of new technologies, new solutions that continue to develop in order to ensure principles of safety are kept and enhanced with the consumer at the centre and keep the world a safer place, but also to consider human rights, free market circulation, and gender equity.

Appliances are now part of connected homes and do much more than their traditional functions of cooking, washing, refrigerating, and cleaning. Thanks to smart tech, they can now regulate their energy consumption, preserve water and, through smart sensors, use data to detect the weight and type of laundry, the type of food being cooked, or adapt to grid requirements by using energy at off-peak moments. This enables them to adapt to another trend — the increased demand for sustainability and energy efficiency. The circular economy is another important requirement — appliances must optimize their design to be more durable and repairable. As everything becomes more connected, household appliances are part of wider automated systems and this needs to be reflected in our standards. The standards we produce at IEC TC61 are used for market supervision by authorities around the world and therefore the work we do is to continuously evolve and ensure that we meet these targets.
